Outdoor Toy Share is the exciting new concept that connects owners of underused outdoor vehicles with people who want to rent them.
WHAT KIND OF OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT CAN BE RENTED?
Boats, RVs, personal watercraft, ATVs, snowmobiles, etc. If it’s made to enjoy the outdoors, we’ve probably got it.
WHAT MAKES OUTDOOR TOY SHARE DIFFERENT?
Unlike rental companies that own their inventory, we make it possible for everyday owners of outdoor vehicles to make money. We are also able to offer potential renters a greater variety of outdoor vehicles. Planning an outdoor adventure should not be cost-prohibitive, so we make the process affordable for those unable to invest in expensive vehicles.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Owners and renters register (for free) on the Outdoor Toy Share site to begin the sharing process. It’s quick, easy and secure. (See more information about the sign-up process here.) For accessibility and convenience, we’ve made sure the entire rental process can be completed online. And if you need help, we’re always around to answer your questions via e-mail or phone. To get started, contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
IS IT SAFE TO RENT MY OUTDOOR VEHICLES?
Renting your boat, RV, or any other outdoor vehicle is completely safe and secure. Outdoor Toy Share screens and insures all potential renters before they can rent your vehicle. As the cornerstone of our business, we take safe sharing of outdoor vehicles very seriously. Also, owners always make the decision to accept or reject all reservation requests.
where can I rent?
We may already be in your area, just try searching for something to see. We highlight a number of popular cities in markets close to us in Boise, McCall, and Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. We’re also expanding into places like Dallas, Phoenix, and more. Check out our Popular Cities page to see where we’re focusing.
what if outdoor toy share isn’t in my city?
We’re excited about the growth of our platform and have ambitious geographic expansion in mind. Our list of Popular Cities is based on feedback we receive from our owners and renters, and this often leads to growth in their own areas. Owners have great boats, RVs and more to rent, then they connect with renters, and the next thing you know, there’s another new market. So, let us know where you’d like to see us next. OTS can lead as well as support those efforts with marketing, etc. Reach out with any comments or questions at email@example.com.
CAN I ADD AN ADDITIONAL OPERATOR TO THE RENTAL?
The person initiating the rental is the primary responsible party. If you would like to add an additional person, we need to know at least 48 hours in advance of the rental commencement to add that person to the insurance policy. If someone is not on the policy, s/he cannot operate the vehicle. Remember: if it’s in your name, you alone are responsible for it during the rental period.
CAN RENTALS BE DELIVERED?
Yes, some owners may deliver and pick up. Generally this is indicated in the owner’s listing, but if you don’t see that information and it is of interest, it never hurts to ask. There may be an extra charge for this service. In certain markets, Outdoor Toy Share is able to perform this service as well. E-mail us for availability at firstname.lastname@example.org.
WHAT IF I NEED TO CANCEL?
Although it’s best to have the transactions completed as planned, we know that issues come up from time to time. Here’s how the following situations are handled on OTS:
Renter cancellation. If a renter cancels before the reservation is accepted by the owner, the renter will be issued a full refund. If the cancellation is made at least one week prior to the reservation, a full refund is provided to the renter, less Outdoor Toy Share’s fees.
If a renter cancels with less than one week’s notice, no refund will be issued the renter, unless that item is rented out to someone else on those same dates and for the same price.
Owner cancellation. If an owner cancels (this may happen due to an unforeseen mechanical issue), the renter will be refunded in full.
Extenuating circumstances. OTS will consider these on a case-by-case basis, but we will do everything possible to accommodate each party.
Inclement weather. If it is unsafe to be outdoors due to lightning, thunderstorms, heavy rain, or wind within 12 hours of rental commencement, please let the owner and Outdoor Toy Share know as soon as possible (by emailing email@example.com) and your rental will be rescheduled at no additional charge. If there is uncertainty about the weather cancellation, then Outdoor Toy Share will make the final determination at its sole discretion.
WHAT IF THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH A RENTAL OF MY VEHICLE?
Most rentals take place without any issue, but these are mechanical devices and sometimes they misbehave.
If the rental ends prematurely and the issue is caused by the renter, then there is ordinarily no refund.
If the issue relates to something the owner should have known or addressed with basic maintenance, then the renter is refunded. Thankfully this doesn’t happen often, but these situations can be tricky, so we try to be reasonable. Where needed, Outdoor Toy Share will gather the facts and make an assessment at its sole discretion.
If problems occur more than once in a three-month period, the vehicle may be removed from the site.
WHAT IF I DAMAGE A VEHICLE I’M RENTING?
If the damage is significant, do not operate the vehicle. If necessary, call 911, followed by the vehicle owner, and then Outdoor Toy Share. Do not admit fault, but do exchange contact information.
We require a security deposit with every rental. If damage occurs, it should be noted in the Inspection Form, agreed to, and signed by both parties. This form should be submitted to Outdoor Toy Share (via firstname.lastname@example.org). If the damage is less than the deposit, the repairs will be taken from the deposit and the remainder returned. If the damage is greater than the deposit, the deposit will be applied to the deductible.
Note: the security deposit may not be sufficient to cover the deductible, in which case the renter will be responsible for the financial difference.
what are the fees?
Outdoor Toy Share is free for owners and renters to sign up and there is no monthly or recurring charge. A renter pays the rate indicated by the owner and a charge for insurance and taxes. There’s also a fully refundable security deposit. These charges are all clearly stated during the online checkout process.
Outdoor Toy Share receives thirty percent (30%) of the owner’s rental fee. This is applied toward insurance, screening, asset-specific and general marketing, search engine optimization, technology enhancements, administration, and our charitable giving.
WHY NOT MEET THROUGH OUTDOOR TOY SHARE AND THEN RENT DIRECTLY WITH THE OTHER PARTY?
One word: insurance. Typically, rentals to a third party are excluded from an owner’s insurance policy. However, our insurance policies are custom designed specifically for rentals. This ensures that both a vehicle and the people operating it are protected—a benefit to both the renter and owner. We also provide a host of services to make your lives easier, including marketing (which helps owners increase their number of rentals), a simple and robust platform to facilitate the details, and more.
Even with an RV where a renter has auto coverage and purchases an insurance binder to extend to the vehicle for rental—a lot of work that Outdoor Toy Share does for you —this only covers the renter and the vehicle; it does not cover the owner.
what about taxes?
Outdoor Toy Share remits sales tax on behalf of the owner for all transactions. The IRS requires us to send 1099s for owners receiving over the annual reporting limit ($600 at the time of this writing). We will need your tax ID number or social security number to meet filing requirements for owners who generate revenue in excess of the IRS’ threshold.
how does insurance work?
We own outdoor vehicles that are rented on Outdoor Toy Share, too. As owners, it’s important that we have and provide others with great insurance coverage. That said, the Outdoor Toy Share insurance is primary, meaning the insurance company won’t look to the renter’s policy first for coverage.
The policy provided by OTS covers the renter, the vehicle’s owner, and the outdoor vehicle itself. Others in our industry provide secondary insurance that will provide coverage starting with the renter’s policy, but this often means uncertainty for the owner and more risk to the renter.
In the case of RV rentals, others in our industry will have renters extend their auto coverage to cover the outdoor vehicle. This puts the owner at significant risk, as the renter and the asset may be covered, but the owner is not. If damages are significant, an owner may have significant recourse, which would NOT be covered without a policy like Outdoor Toy Share’s.
do you offer discounts or incentives?
Yes, we frequently run campaigns that not only include discounts for you or family/friends you tell about Outdoor Toy Share, but we often give away really cool stuff. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to learn more and see the latest incentive to try out OTS.
ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL CHARGES FOR DAMAGE?
We hate to do this, so please return the vehicle to its owner in the same or better condition. If it is returned unreasonably dirty (think: sand, pet hair, trash, etc.) there will be a charge for the time and cost for professional cleaning. It’s easy to prevent these charges, though—just stop at a car wash and carefully vacuum the interior.
If the tanks aren’t returned in the same state (full of gas, propane, water, etc.), our standard charge applies: a $50 hourly rate, at one hour minimum. If a rental is returned late, a pro-rated hourly rental rate will be assessed. If another rental is impacted due to a late return, the renter will pay the full daily rate until the vehicle is returned. If OTS needs to become extensively involved, we may also charge for our administrative time at the same $50 hourly rate.
If you’re looking to rent a boat, RV, or other outdoor vehicle for a fun excursion, here’s an overview of how the Outdoor Toy Share process works.
It takes less than a minute to sign up and start looking for the perfect boat or RV to rent for your next adventure.
Once you find an outdoor vehicle to rent, you’ll see a general description of the item, included accessories, and its availability. Just click RESERVE to start the process. If you have questions about the vehicle, we make it easy for you to message the owner.
If this is your first rental through Outdoor Toy Share, we’ll ask you a few one-time questions and you’ll be prompted to enter a little information for our third-party background check (we use a reputable business that keeps your data secure). Background checks are usually complete within a few minutes. Once that’s clear, the proposed rental arrangement is sent to the owner for approval.
The owner may have questions, so keep an eye out for an email response or phone call. Once approved, you’ll receive a notification that prompts you to log in to the system and pay securely with a credit card.
As your rental date approaches, you’ll receive an email containing an inspection form that both parties must agree to and sign, both before and after the rental. The purpose of this form is to document the condition of the vehicle to ensure sure rentals are returned in the proper condition. We encourage you to take as many photos or videos as possible to supplement the form.
During the rental process, you should have worked out the details on where/when to pick up and return the outdoor vehicle. When you meet with the owner, they will give you an overview of the basic operations and safety.
Remember, safety equipment is the renter’s responsibility. So be sure both parties are clear about what the rental includes, in case there are additional items the renter needs to bring (a few extra life jackets, etc.).
We ask that you return the rented vehicle in the same condition—or better. In part, this request addresses fuel, cleanliness, etc. There will be a charge for the time and expense it takes to remediate any damage and/or hire professional cleaning service if the owner gets the rented vehicle back in poor condition.
When your rental period is finished, you’ll receive an email request to submit a quick rating. Please provide this feedback, as it takes less than 30 seconds, and is really helpful for renters and owners alike.
If you have an outdoor vehicle in your garage that just isn’t getting used, rent it out with Outdoor Toy Share to make a little money. Here’s how we’ll help you rent it.
It only takes a few minutes to sign up and list your vehicle on our site. We’ll walk you through a few simple steps to create your profile, include important information about your vehicle, and upload photos that show it off. If you have questions, you can always reach us at email@example.com.
Once you’ve listed your vehicle, Outdoor Toy Share will do a quick review of your listing and post it for rental.
We accept payments from renters via credit card. In order to pay you as quickly as possible, we’ll help you quickly setup an account directly with our credit card processor (a large, reputable 3rd party handling billions of dollars in payments annually). This allows us to pay you for the rental quickly and without directly needing your banking information.
Keep an eye out for questions and rental requests from renters. When a rental request is submitted, you’ll receive a notification detailing the renter’s experience level and any questions they might have. You’ll have the ability to respond, ask further questions, and/or approve or reject any rental requests.
When you choose to accept a match, a reservation is made, and the renter pays Outdoor Toy Share. We hold onto the money until the rental is complete, so you won’t need to worry about coordinating payment with the renter.
It’s important that your vehicle be in good hands. Before the rental, Outdoor Toy Share will provide you and the renter with copies of the insurance card issued for the rental.
A few days before the rental, you will receive an inspection form that will help you document the condition of the vehicle before rental. Both parties will need to sign this form both before and after the rental. To expedite the process, many owners choose to fill out the form when the renter arrives for pick-up. We encourage you to take as many photos or videos as possible to supplement the form.
When the renter arrives, give them an overview of the basic operations and safety. Make sure they know in advance of their arrival what safety equipment will be provided. While these items (life jackets, etc.) are the renter’s responsibility, it is often helpful when owners provide them.
When the rental is complete, both parties will agree on the condition of the vehicle and sign the inspection form. We ask that you (the owner) submit the form by uploading it to our site. This submission triggers the final step of the rental process and prompts us to send you payment, which usually occurs within 24 hours.
HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY PROFILE?
Upload a profile picture. As a renter or an owner, this visual is a good reminder to another party that we’re not just robots, but real people. This can be done upon initial sign-up, or if it’s later, you can sign in via our website, mouse over the dropdown menu in the top right corner under your name, select ‘Account’ and upload an image there.
If you’re an owner, photos of your outdoor vehicle also make a big difference. Rather than posting an image of your vehicle sitting in a garage, show your boat being used out on the water, or share a photo of your friends enjoying your RV during a recent camping trip. Make sure the image is well-lit. Take a look at an example on our site if you need inspiration. You can always change your photos by logging in at www.outdoortoyshare.com, mousing over your name at the top right, choosing ‘My Items’, then ‘Photos’ toward the left side of the page.
WHAT CHARITABLE EFFORTS IS OTS INVOLVED WITH?
Although we don’t talk about it as much as we probably should, OTS is very committed to giving back to charitable organizations that relate to our business. As each market is unique, we want to partner with local charities in our cities to which we can give back. We’re always looking for new partnerships, so if you’re passionate about a cause or know of a nonprofit that would be a good fit with our business, let us know!
Let us know if you have any other questions (firstname.lastname@example.org). We update this page regularly and can add additional information.
